POLITICS: Bad state of Ekpoma Roads Hinders Economic Growth in Edo State- Kelly Udebhulu Tells Governor Obaseki.

Osaze Jackson reports.

EKPOMA-A chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and a known community crusader and activist , Prince Kelly O. Udebhulu, from Urohi community in Esan west local government of Edo state, has urged Governor Godwin Obaseki, to fix the roads at Ekpoma and environs as the rainy season turns the dilapidated roads  death-traps which is having great negative impact on the commerce of Edo state.

“A recent survey shows that the dilapidated roads in Ekpoma has impacted negatively on commerce and the socio-economic lives of the people, resulting in high cost of transportation and food stuffs, thereby leaving the tax-paying masses to bear the brunt.” He said.

The APC Chieftain however, appealed to the state Governor Obaseki to act fast in this regard as he described Benin-Auchi’s road all through to Ewu in Esan central local government area of the state including Urohi road, Emuhi road and Egoro road among others in Esan west local government as death traps for the inhabitants and users. Criminals use the bad conditions of the roads to unleash their hazardous activities on commuters and inhabitants daily.

In his narrative as contained in the issued statement yesterday at his country home in Ekpoma;

“It has really been a horrifying experience driving through the roads within Ekpoma to drop and pick children from school daily.
“Commerce is worst hit, as the number of traders who travel to the popular Ekpoma and Urohi markets has declined as a result of the poor condition of the roads.’’ he lamented.

“It is hinting negatively on the economic development in edo state because commuters plying the ever-busy Benin-Auchi-Okenne highway are groaning as a result of the pains they experience travelling through the road due to its dilapidated state, especially the four kilometres stretch after the Benin bypass, Obagie, Iruekpen, Ekpoma and Ewu axis.”

“In fact, it is not possible for any vehicle to drive for two minutes without encountering bad spots, potholes and completely impassable portions of the road.

“The worst section of the road is in Ekpoma, where commuters would have to veer off the highway to go through inner-city roads and then come out at Irrua, a nearby community. Commuters spend over two hours trying to navigate out of Ekpoma dilapidated road which discourages traders and business men and women to repeat such journey to the area again.

Evans sues Police, says charge me or free me, dad files 27-point affidavit in support.

Evans the kignap kingpin

•We have court order to hold him for 3 months — POLICE .

•He’s innocent until proved guilty by court — LAWYER.

LAGOS — Kidnap kingpin, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike a.k.a. Evans, has dragged the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris and three others before the Federal High Court in Lagos over alleged illegal detention.

Joined as respondents in the suit are the Nigeria Police Force, Commissioner of Police, Lagos State and the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, Lagos State Police Command. In the rights enforcement suit filed on his behalf by a Lagos-based lawyer, Olukoya Ogungbeje, Evans is praying for the order of court to direct the respondents to immediately charge him to court if there is any case against him in accordance with Sections 35 (1) (c) (3) (4) (5) (a) (b) and 36 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. In the alternative, he is praying the court to compel the respondents to immediately release him unconditionally in the absence of any offence that will warrant his being charged to court.

Evans is further contending in the suit that his continued detention by the respondents since June 10, 2017, without being charged to court or released on bail is an infringement on his fundamental human rights. He argued that the respondents ought to have charged him to court in accordance with the provisions of Sections 35 and 36 of the Constitution.

It was further argued that the alleged offence committed by the applicant (Evans) are correspondingly intertwined with the constitutional safeguards as provided under Sections 35 and 36 of the Constitution.

Evans’ dad deposes to affidavit in son’s support To support Evans’ case, his father, Stephen Onwuamadike personally deposed to a 27-paragraph affidavit in support of the suit. In his affidavit, Evans’ father averred that his son (applicant) has been subjected to media trial without any court order by the respondents.

He further averred that the media trial and news orchestrated by the respondents have continued to generate reactions in both print and electronic media without his son being afforded fair hearing and trial before a court of law.

He added that since his son’s arrest, all his family members have been denied access to him while media practitioners have been granted unfettered access to him. The matter has not been assigned to any judge and no date has been fixed for the hearing.

We have court order to hold him for 3 months.

Police Meanwhile, reacting to the suit, spokesman for the Police High Command, Jimoh Moshood said that the Police had obtained a court order from a Federal High Court, Abuja, to detain Evans for three months, in order to allow them carry out proper investigation on the suspect. The investigation, according to the police will take operatives to Ghana, South Africa and many parts of the country before he could be arraigned.

Deputy Commissioner of Police, Administration, in the Lagos Command, Dasuki Galandanci had told journalists last Friday that the Police is in the midst of a thorough investigation on Evans. He said: “Evans has been a kidnapper for a long time and has been on the wanted list of the Police in Anambra, Abuja, Enugu, Edo and Lagos States. He also has a criminal gang, some of whom have been arrested in Enugu and Lagos.

“But there are still more out there. Therefore, this needs a painstaking investigation. Besides, we need to understudy him as well as debrief him properly. By so doing, we intend to use his tactics to get others. He will eventually be charged to court after investigation is concluded.”
‘He is innocent before the law until proved guilty’

Also, reacting to Evans suit, a lawyer and Don, Gbenga Ojo, said, “It may surprise Nigerians that he had to approach the court, however, in the eyes of the law, he is presumed innocent until pronounced guilty by a competent court. However, as it is, I don’t think any court will grant him bail considering the allegations levelled against him.

“It is the same law that gives him fundamental human rights to seek redress in court that provides that no one can kill other persons unlawfully or kidnap and subject victims to unbearable conditions. So, the court will look at all these before considering to do anything. In my opinion, no court will allow such application to fly.

“However, if the prosecution is not ready to arraign him now due to their investigation, they should take him to the magistrate court to get a remand order, pending the conclusion of their investigation.”

AGRICULTURE: 72 Metric Tonnes Of Yam Leave Nigeria For Europe, US Today.

Yam

Efforts by the federal government to diversify the economy is beginning to yield results, as the federal government is set to export 72 metric tonnes of yam to Europe and the United States today.

In a major diversification breakthrough, the minister Of Agriculture, Audu Ogbeh, announced yesterday that the Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the exportation of yams to the United States and United Kingdom.

Ogbeh disclosed this to State House correspondents after the weekly FEC meeting presided over by Acting President Yemi Osinbajo at the presidential villa, Abuja.

The minister was joined at the FEC briefing by his science and technology as well as Health counterparts, Ogbonaya Onu and Isaac Adewole respectively, and Special adviser to the president on media and publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina.

Ogbeh noted that his ministry informed  council that last week, they completed arrangements for the first formal export of Nigerian yams to the United Kingdom.

He said, “Some people have asked whether by exporting yams we are not going to subject Nigeria to hunger and I had to inform council today that that will not certainly not rise. You will remember that about February or March this year some of you asked the same question: ‘is Nigeria going to face famine?’ and I said it cannot happen. Apart from the crisis in the Northeast, we definitely are not short of food. Although prices are high in some areas, we are not short of food.

“Tomorrow, we shall flag off this export in three container loads containing 72 tones of Nigerian yams. Two containers went out in February; one arrived in New York on the 16th of this month. This is important because for those of you who travel and many Nigerians out there, you go to shops where they sell African foods and you never see anything from Nigeria. It is mostly called Ghana yams.

“Now, we account for 61% of the total output of yams in the world, according to the Food and Agriculture Organisation. The rest is shared between some countries in West Africa and the West Indies. For us to go abroad and not find Nigerian yams in the market is an embarrassment”.

Ogheh observed that Ghana is targeting $4 billion from yams in the next three years and if they can do that, Nigerians who are the masters of yam production have no business lagging behind.

He also observed that Nigerians don’t even consume all the yams they produce  because most of it is lost to wastage due to poor technologies in preservation.

He further explained: “We are going to provide solar coolers in yam markets and yam producing areas to keep the temperature at 14 degrees Celsius; not frozen  but to keep it at that temperature so that it can be good all year round and can last up to two to three years in the containers.

“Essentially, we are making this point because we are diversifying the economy. We are talking about economic recovery and growth and we will have to export whatever is needed from Nigeria by other countries so we can earn more foreign exchange, rather than expend everything we have on importation. If they want yams we will sell yams, if they want pepper we will sell pepper, if they want ginger we will sell ginger.

“Just like we buy so much from them, it is time for them to buy from us. I assure you this is how the economy of Nigeria we are dreaming of is going to recover. The only challenge we may face will be the question of labour. The young men who make heaps are reducing in number because they are moving to the cities, riding ‘okada’ and looking for white collar jobs”.

The minister specifically noted that to solve that problem, the government is mechanising the production of yams and has designed a new plough that will be attached to the tractor to make  the yam heap, adding that the current ploughs in the country cannot make a heap.

“In Illorin, the Nigerian Centre for Agric Mechanisation is producing a new plough that can make the yam heaps and once that is in operation, we will mechanise the production. We should look at the opportunity to export yams not as a problem but as an economic opportunity”, he added.

He also disclosed that food exports have gone up in Nigeria in the last one year by 82 per cent and that government wants to make sure that what is produced meets the finest standard in the market.

Ogheh continued: “We have shipped some to the US. This consignment is for the UK. I was in Dakar just two weeks ago and Nigerians there said they need yam from Nigeria as well that can go through trucks.

“But the other good news is cashew nuts; this things look small. We are in conversation with Walmart, the biggest supermarket chain in the US. They came here and asked us to roast cashew nuts for them. Their demand is 130,000 tonnes of cashew nuts per annum. The total value is $7 billion but what we are doing now is shipping raw cashew to vietnam. They are the ones roasting and selling to the US. This year, we are going to create six cashew processing factories in Nigeria, one to be sited in Enugu, Imo, Benue, Kogi, Kwara and Oyo States. These are the cashew belt for now.

“These things are coming because at last, Nigeria is beginning to focus on non oil export. Once you can diversify your economy, if something goes wrong in one sector you can hang on to the other. This is yam; we are looking at industrial starch for the textile industry and for export to China”.

On his part, Onu said his ministry presented a Science and Technology and Innovation roadmap for 2017-2030.

He also disclosed that by the ministry’s projections, there are estimates that by 2050, Nigeria, by purchasing power parity, will be the ninth largest economy in the world but cannot get there without Science and Technology.

He said, “We have been so worried that in our country, children and pupils in secondary and primary schools do not like to study Mathematics and Science subjects and that has been a worry to us as a nation.

“We see that our lack of interest in science and technology has resulted in. If we want to embark on major projects in the country like building a dam, a refinery or airport or seaport, we rely on foreign expertise.

“When it comes to Science and Technology many things that we can’t do has to be done from outside. This has created a lot of problems for us as a nation because when you import these things you arevalso exporting jobs, creating unemployment for our people and putting undue pressure on the currency and also aggravating poverty in the nation.

The minister added: “We decided that this must change, that we must have a science technology roadmap that will take our people beyond where we are now to prepare Nigeria to be truly great nation where we will have the capacity to use the natural resources we have to meet the needs we have as a nation so that we can become self reliant.

“In the roadmap, we also identified all the things that we need to do to place Nigeria in a position that it should be. In essence, there is difference between developed nations of the world that are the richest in the world and the developing countries that are poor. The main difference is Science and Technology and they now they apply it to nation building”.

Edo Central Politics: We are too Smart to be Deceived.

Gov Obaseki
By Ogbeide Usifoh.

Let me state clearly: The article written by one Innocent Omozokpia and published in an Esanblog of 24th June, 2017, is not only hollow but falsehood that emerged from idle gossips and cesspool of cynicism; a worthless piece of work sponsored by political proxy aimed at casting aspersions on these illustrious political pillars from Esan land and painting them in bad light with ultimate aim at bringing them disrepute with the Governor and Edo people in general.

Interestingly, Omozokpia wrote his presumptuous and conclusive write-up without consulting any of the five APC's aspirants-APC ASPIRANTS HAVE NO PLIGHT!!!"

In my years of experience, I have never read such ill motivated piece set in bigotry and deception to tarnish the good reputation of Noble Kinsmen.

Let facts speak for itself. Omozokpia claimed as follow that:

"Obaseki used and dumped the five Esan APC governorship aspirants from Edo central in the 2016 governorship race".

That claim is factually wrong and an attempt to belittle the efforts of Esan APC's guber aspirants and an expired strategy to deceive unsuspecting members of the public, particularly from Edo Central.

First of all, let me say without mincing words that the action of the writer is quite unfortunate because it doesn’t portray him as a good investigative journalist but rather shows effort to smear the names of the five APC's governorship aspirants who contested in the Edo state governorship primary race last year because he never contacted them before going to the press.

In his journey of blackmail, he further averred:

"After the primaries, Obaseki reached out to them and pleaded with them to work for him while promising to reward them with juicy positions and mouth watering contracts once he assumes office. The state leaders of the party further lent credence to the "sweet talk" when they promised to zone the Secretary to the State Government or chief of Staff position to Esan Land to compensate the area for losing out of the party's Governorship and Deputy Governorship tickets which were grabbed by Edo South and Edo North respectively. This promise was said to have fired the five Esan APC aspirants into action as it was believed that one of them would pick up the position while the rest would settle for contracts should Obaseki emerge victorious."

What a copious and presumptive lies. Oh mine! I shiver the effortless way Omozokpia manufactured lies. Were you present or amongst the aspirants during the meeting where the agreement was signed?

Many had thought after the disgraceful rejection of Ize-Iyamu and his band of shameless PDP`s propagandist by Edo people, and rudderless sail both in the election tribunal and appeal courts respectively, which confirmed that political herdsmen will never defeat the will of the people, they will at least stop their ululations. Ala! Not so! Fiends and carpenters disguising as journalists are still fouling the air with their stinks.

Omozokpia in wishful imagination, further stated:

"...(the aspirants) plunged head long into the murky waters of guber campaign in their respective local government areas. Some became emergency philanthropists sharing wrappers, rice and other food items to entice the people. They mounted a very serious campaign for Obaseki and did all they could to sell him to the electorate. At the of end of it all, Obaseki was declared the winner of the September 28 2016 Governorship Election"

YES! After the primaries, a winner emerged and to ensure that Esan is not completely isolated and made pariah district in Edo politics, which PDP has consigned Esan land, coupled with the fact that they are noble men of political far-sight and insight, as well as disciplined party members, they decided to campaign for their candidate Obaseki, with or without any prompting from Obaseki. What is wrong as a party member?

An Esan adage states: "Cheap mind believes everybody is cheap". Omozokpia best interprets the common theory of his party PDP:

"I am not, others are not better either".

This fiend from the stable of Moloch, even desecrated the throne of Lucifer when he claimed as follows:

"After losing out of the juicy positions, some of the aspirants including Arc. Ilenre Emuan and Martins Ataman lobbied for commissionership positions.

"Earlier (early) in the week, the full list of commissioner-nominees was submitted to the state House of Assembly by the governor and their names were conspicuously missing".

Though I am not holding brief for Austin Emuan or Chief Matthew Atamah (not Martins), I know they will never dignify this hollow and mendicant mind Omozokpia.

But going beyond the veil, it is clear the target of Omozokpia effort in perfidy is Arc. Austin Ilenre Emuan. This article is meant to dis-market the young man, whose profile in Edo Central is rising daily. Omozokpia´s benefactors know with his pedigree, background, insight and beauty of mind, sun is set for their political careers in Esan land.

Arc. Austin Ilenre Emuan's unit, ward and local government executives were utterly surprised when he declared no interest in commissionership. Emuan believes one don't need to be a commissioner before he or she can impact their environment positively. Even officially to the ignorant of Omozokpia that under this state government, there are guidelines for the positions released so far.
In his conclusion, Omozopkia claimed that:

"This is the plight of the five Esan APC governorship aspirants who are currently counting their losses and licking their wounds in silence.".

What a shallow and warped mind to write such! In all, Omozokpia and his types must grow up as Esan politics is growing very fast.

Creating grazing range will end Fulani herdsmen/farmers conflict − poll.

herdsman
"The pressure to move south with cows and cattle is both the need to look for food for their herds as well as the market to sell them off"

In the poll, respondents were asked what they thought the solution to the crises was between creating a grazing range around the country and enforcing the ranching system on cattle rearers. Respondents were asked why they chose either of the options and they were given the option to suggest other solutions, in case they think neither of the two options would be adequate.

One trend among respondents supporting the ranching option is that if one must rear cattle, one must be ready to bear the cost of feeding them without upsetting others in the process.

“The herdsmen should and must be able to feed their livestock not to the detriment of other people’s properties. Herdsmen, should be restricted to their ranches, we are living in a civilised world today,” a respondent said.

While supporting ranching, one respondent argue against grazing areas, saying “Ranching is the practice in all developing and developed world. Creating grazing fields won’t solve the problem because the cattle will still need to move from one grazing area to another. As long as they continue to move, they will continue to encroach on people’s farms.”

“Ranching forces people to recognise that cattle keeping is a private affair and you should be willing to create the correct business environment and be willing to pay for it. In other words if you want a ranch in Owo then buy the land legitimately and keep your cattle and don’t trespass on other people’s properties,” a respondent said.

Respondents in support of grazing reserves appear to view the issue from the perspective of proper monitoring. They argue that security agencies will be able to monitor the herdsmen properly if there are designated grazing areas around the country.

“When all cattle gather to feed, their waste could be used to generate power. Also the security forces can identify with the cattle breeders and fish out the ones that don’t have a certificate of breeding,” another respondent said.

“The nomadic way of rearing animals in Nigeria is outdated and will not meet current and future meat production in largest black nation. Nigeria government with the support of state and farmer associations should set up farms. This should be looked at from pure business rather than outdated and criminal free grazing. Any future killing or harassment of farmers should be treated as murder case and treason against the nation,” a respondent said.

One respondent who said neither of the two options could give the best solution identified transportation of cattle to market as one major reason for moving the cattle around in the first place and not necessarily feeding. The respondent suggested that if a good transportation system could be used to connect the north and the south purposely for transporting livestock, then the issue would be resolved.

A respondent said, “While it may be true that the Fulani herdsmen are nomadic they can remain so in the vast territory of the northern part of the country. I venture to state that the major reason why the Fulani have to drive their cattle across the country and particularly southwards is to get them to the market. There is none of the herdsmen groups that will bring their herds of cattle down south and return back to the north with them. They will always ensure that they sell them off. The pressure to move south is both the need to look for food for their herds as well as the market to sell them off.
This therefore tells me that it is principally the market that brings them on to farmlands in the south going as further down south as Oyo and Ekiti States. If government is desirous of stopping the incessant killings and fights between farmers and herdsmen, it could create train/cattle depots and limit the footprint of the herdsmen further south thus reducing conflicts.

In addition to moving the cattle via trains, perhaps the Federal and State governments can establish refrigerated railway wagon systems which will be deployed to bring down already butchered cow meat from these Train/Cattle depots to centers of population further south. This will reduce greatly the herdsmen footprint and therefore the frequency of conflicts.

It is my view that the businessmen whose cattle the Fulani herdsmen are moving around should be made to play fundamental roles in this proposal. I have not come across any comments or contributions on this issue that has demanded their direct involvement. Neither have there been any of them coming forward to proffer any solutions from their perspective. Cow management business including moving them around is a business and the business stakeholders must all come together to resolve the Fulani – Farmer conflict.

In all, respondents seem to agree that if the crises are not handled promptly and carefully, grave consequences could be encountered in future.

Ekiti 2018: 6 PDP aspirants suspend ambition, back Fayose

Ado-Ekiti—Some gubernatorial aspirants of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, in Ekiti state have suspended their ambition to enable Governor Ayodele Fayose seek  legal redress over his aborted first tenure as governor of the state, and possibly re-contest in the gubernatorial election in 2018.

The aspirants  include current Deputy Governor of the state, Kolapo Olusola, from Ikere Local Government  Area, Bisi Omoyeni, Ikere LGA, Sikiru Tae Lawal, Ado LGA, Kayode Oso, Ado LGA, Owoseni Ajayi, Ise LGA and Bisi Komolafe, Efon LGA, said they suspended their gubernatorial aspirations pending the determination of the matter in court.

However the name of one of the party’s prominent aspirant and the spokesperson for the Ahmed Makarfi’s faction of the Peoples Democratic Party, Prince Dayo Adeyeye was conspicuously missing in the communique made available to newsmen in Ado-Ekiti yesterday.

The communique of their meeting which was co-signed by the aspirants and read by the Deputy Governor Olusola reads in part:

“That the Supreme Court in the case of APC versus PDP & ORS resolved that the first tenure of Governor Peter Ayodele Fayose was unlawfully terminated in a civilian coup-like manner and hence deserves redress.’’

Breaking: Kidnapped Ondo APC Chieftain Olumide Odimayo found dead.

late Odimayo
A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, party in Ondo state, Olumide Odimayo, aka “Londoner” who was kidnapped last week Thursday by unknown gunmen at his hometown in Igbotu has been found dead.

Some local vigilante members who confirmed this to newsmen said the corpse of Late Mr. Odimayo was found near Ogolo River, between Sabomi and Igbotu in Ese Odo Local Government Area of the state.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) spokesman in the state, Mr.  Omo’ba Abayomi Adesanya expressed shock at the news, describing it as tragic. “The tragic death of Mr. Olumide Odimayo is a rude shock to us in the party because this is someone who came from London and started the struggle with us.

“I can’t get myself as I am speaking with you. Although, our party members have been sending their condolences to his family but his death is very painful to us all” he said.
