The visiting acting Inspector General of Police complained of
stagnation in the Force where he said some Officers had been in one rank for
upwards of eight to nine years because of non-availability of establishment
vacancies, a development which he said had seriously affected the morale of the
Officers. He appealed to the Commission to assist the Force in ensuring
that more establishment vacancies are created to cater for the backlog of
promotions in the Force.
The
Acting Inspector General of Police, IGP, Solomon Arase also called on the
Police Service Commission, PSC, to recruit more people into the Nigeria Police,
stating that the Force is under-staffed. Arase,
who made this call Monday during his visit to the Chairman of the commission in
Abuja, lamented that about 20 to 30 policemen die on a monthly basis and that
no provision has been made yet for their replacement.
Chairman,
PSC, Mike Okiro, in his response, admitted that Nigeria was under-policed and
noted that there was need for urgent recruitment into the Force to ensure that
the nation is well- policed.
He
agreed with the acting IGP that there was need to replace lost Officers who may
have died in the course of duty.
Okiro
also promised to create establishment vacancies to accommodate backlog of
promotions in the Force.
The
acting IGP pledged the loyalty of the Police management team to the Commission
and promised a cordial and fruitful relationship for the optimal effectiveness
and efficiency of the Force.
